About the position
The researcher will be working with subjects such as European security and defence policy, European defence industrial integration and transatlantic relations, mainly connected to the project entitled TABS: “Towards Transatlantic Burden Shifting? Insights from US - Norway Defense Cooperation amidst diverging strategic priorities”. The TABS project explores if and if so how European rearmament and increased defence effort bind the US closer to Europe.
There may also be some intersecting tasks in other related projects such as “Norge og rommet: Strategisk posisjonering, alliert samarbeid og eksponering” (NSpace) and “Changing transatlantic security relations: Implications for Europe and Norway” (TransatDefence).
The position is for the duration of one year with no teaching obligations and has a possibility of prolongation if funding allows.
The proposed starting date for the Researcher position is as soon as possible and no later than 1 August 2026.
You will be provided with office space, equipment, and services as well as necessary resources for research related field work and conference travel.
Your areas of responsibility
- Participate in data analysis
- Contribute to report writing
- Carry out project-related tasks as part of the research team
- Participate in project workshops and meetings with the project’s advisory board
- Co-organize international and national academic, policy, and public events
- Disseminate research findings to decision-makers, practitioners, and the wider public
As a researcher, you will be working together with Research Professor Pernille Rieker and Research Professor Marianne Riddervold at ARENA.

Qualifications
- Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant discipline within the social sciences before taking up the post (SKO 1109).
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate an ability to conduct high quality research in European security and defence integration, including defence industrial integration and transatlantic relations.
- Applicants must have experience with qualitative interviews.
- ARENA’s working language is English. Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are therefore required.
- A good command of either Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is also a requirement.
In assessing the candidates, particular emphasis will be placed on the quality and relevance of the submitted research publications and the article proposal.
Personal suitability and motivation will be taken into consideration.

- a short presentation of yourself,
- a short presentation of your merits,
- a short presentation of your intended research and
- a short account of why ARENA and TABS is of interest to you.
2. A proposal for a journal article relevant to the TABS research focus (maximum 1500 words, excluding bibliography). The proposal must demonstrate familiarity with previous research within the area, an ability to formulate a scientific problem and to specify a relevant research design and methods.
3. A CV summarizing your education, academic employments and other qualifying activities that you may have. The period of enrolment (admission – completion) in the PhD programme you have attended must be specified.
4. A complete list of publications

6. Three writing samples (e.g. published articles or working papers).
